Peggy Sagers

I'm back from the Sewing and Quilt Expo in Kansas City.  Over the next couple of weeks I'll be blogging about classes I took and all the great vendors I met and their products.  I took two classes from Peggy Sagers, the woman behind Silhouette Patterns.  One of the classes was called Sew With a Plan (SWAP).  She is actually taking this class into some Hancock Fabric stores so you might want to check out the schedule to see if one is coming to a city near you.

This class was all about adding to your wardrobe seasonally, but really planning out what will work with what you have, what fabrics will work, and what type of clothing you should focus on.  It was full of great ideas and I'm looking forward to using all the great advice to help me add to my own wardrobe.

One thing she focused on in the class was the fabric stash.  She suggested that having a fabric stash can really take away from the creative process.  Also, how many of us actually sew from our stash?  She brought up some great points but I began to justify my stash (smallish, but growing) because I am a craft sewer as well and having little bits and bobs serve me well.

What do all of you think about the concept of a stash.  Do you have one?  Do you work one project to the next and don't need one?  Let's chat about this in the comments.

I have a gigantic fabric, ribbon, yarn (and much more) stash…and hope to one day have some time to make things out of it. But to my credit, I got it all when it was on a great sale or super clearance.

Most of my stash was given to me. When I make something new, I get great satisfaction using my stash! However, I think I am ready to scale it down a bit. I’ve already done it with my yarn. Now it’s time to do it with my fabric.

I have a smallish stash and it’s full of fabrics I purchased at ridiculously low clearance prices (I’m talking 50 cents to $2 a yard). I *do* sew from my stash since I usually buy in 2 – 3 yard lengths. I don’t feel a bit guilty about bringing home fabric without a specific pattern in mind :)

That’s kind of tough for me. I like to work with recycled fabrics, remnants and vintage stuff. I just can’t go into a store and buy them when I need them. I’ve gotta grab them when I can.

I have a rule, though. If I get something new, something old has to go. I have very limited storage space in my sewing room!

I have a pretty small fabric stash. I stash more felt than anything. I usually don’t get the itch to stitch until winter/Christmas time – so my color palette is pretty predictable.

I have a huge stash, and it’s constantly growing! I get “donations” from a lot of friends and family and I am a hard core pack rat. I used to buy fabric, notions, and patterns for each project I wanted to make and they are all neatly labeled and sorted into bags, sadly most have never been made, but I do have a lot of great fabric. If you ever need fabric just let me know, I have an interesting collection!
