How to Cut Vinyl with the Cricut

Posted by christy in Cricut | Home Decor | Projects | Tutorials

Cutting your own vinyl lettering and images is really easy with the Cricut but so many people don’t try it because it looks a bit intimidating.  I made a video to show you just how simple it is to do.  On the video I am cutting out letters to put on a bucket I got from the Target $1 spot.  Did you see the vinyl on the vase from yesterday?   I’m sensing a theme.  I wonder what else I can find from there to adhere my vinyl to?

To cut vinyl with your Cricut, you’ll need some supplies.

Cricut machine (assuming you have a mat, blade, and a cartridge)

Vinyl

Transfer Tape

Tool Kit (useful, but optional)

I have been trying to do more of the intricate designs such as the one you did on the white vase. I’m having a lot of trouble getting the access vinyl off without it pulling away at the design I’ve created. I’m using the tools and trying to be careful. I’m starting to wonder if the intricate designs just have to be made larger when using vinyl? Any tips?

  • You should be able to cut more intriciate designs. Here are a few things you might want to check:

    1. Your blade. Is your blade sharp? You’ll want a blade in tip-top condition for cutting your vinyl. You might just want to take it out and maybe clean it a bit. Sometimes little paper bits get stuck on it.

    2. Check your pressure. Is it cutting all the way through the vinyl? You might need to adjust your pressure so the cut is going all the way through the vinyl.

    3. Blade depth. This goes along with the pressure issue. Your blade “should” be able to make the perfect kiss cut set at medium (or 3 bars).

    4. Your design. Make sure the design is one that translates well to vinyl. Some of the cartridges have designs meant for layering so instead of cutting out certain areas, they leave little scoring spots on the design so you know exactly where to place the layers. If there are any of these on your design, they won’t cut out.

I hope one or more of those tips help fix your issue!
