  • Technically, I did not finish.  Here is my photographic evidence of the night. You will notice that when the flame is being extinguished, I still have my knitting on the needles.  I still had a few minutes left of knitting to do. Since we got to cast on during the beginning of the opening ceremonies, I figure I have until the end of the closing ceremonies to finish.  The knitting is complete! Is it a completed garment?  No.  But I did it!  Here's my knitting olympics analogy:  I sk... more »
  • Four years ago I knit my first lace project during the winter Olympics.  I thought it would be fun to participate as part of the Yarn Harlot's Knitting Olympics.  I was right.  It was a blast.  Here is what I made in two weeks. It took a lot of sacrifice.  I couldn't even take breaks to eat solid food! But it was so worth it!  Having that gold medal and being a Knitting Olympian confirmed that I'm crazy changed my life. I'm going to do it again.  I just don't know what I ... more »
  • Last month I wrote about the French Press Felted Slipper pattern that I knew I had to make.  It is the kind of pattern that is quick enough to knit but isn't something you can just knit without thinking.  The pattern needs to be followed and it isn't one that can be memorized easily.  For this reason, I had to knit this project over a few nights.  The total time spent knitting was probably just over 90 minutes.  The seaming took another 60 minutes.  The felting took another 30 minutes ... more »
  • I knit this really cute scarf last year.  I started it in February and finished it in December.  It was my "purse project".  I kept it in my purse and worked on it whenever I was waiting somewhere.  I used the chevron scarf pattern from Last Minute Knitted Gifts.  I used some Noro sock yarn (color 95) that I purchased on my trip to NYC in 2008.  I used one whole skein and worked from both ends to make the color changes. When you knit something, chances are you'll need to block it.  But... more »
  • How's that for an attractive snapshot?  I spent some time over the weekend felting some slippers and I had the grand idea of vlogging it for all the world to see.  Don't you want to learn how to felt? Here's a great video for you. If you don't want to take the time to watch the video (just over 3 minutes), here are some highlights. 1.  You must use 100% wool. 2.  Hot water and agitation are key. 3.  Use a top loading washer or by hand. 4.  It will take a while. ... more »
  • Every once in a while I see a knitting pattern that I. Must. Knit. Now.   Today I was cruising through my Google Reader and I saw the Yarn Harlot's post.  She mentions a pattern (that is now a serious best seller---an mention on the Harlot's blog and you're good to go!) that I knew I needed to try.  Today. [caption id="attachment_2674" align="aligncenter" width="430" caption="image copyright French Press Knits, LLC"][/caption] I bought the pattern (she has it on Ravelry for $.50 less) and... more »
  • I have some of the most amazing friends.  One of my husband's former grad students (he's a professor) had a baby and I threw a shower for her over the weekend.  Her mom is visiting her from China for several months to help with the baby.  She knows that I love to knit and her mom does, too.  They gifted this yarn to me the at the end of the baby shower.  Unlike my husband (at times), they knew exactly what I wanted! I don't read Chinese so I don't know the content.  It's a fingering w... more »
  • This little baby hat is so darn cute!  It is very similar to the pumpkin hat to make.  The only difference is that you'll want to cast on twice as many stitches.  Then, the first row you knit 2 together all the way around. I used some leftover Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece for this project.  The cotton isn't as forgiving as a wool or acrylic blend, but it makes for a great lightweight hat.  The cotton fleece washes up really nicely and becomes super soft. Are you tired of all the knit hats?... more »
  • More pumpkins!  This time I've got a cute little pumpkin hat to show you.  I make a couple of these every year but this year, my daughter's preschool teacher and some of the other mom's there are keeping my hands super busy with orders for 4 of these guys!  They are super easy to knit and don't take too much time.  I put on the tv at night and knit away. This is your basic, run of the mill, hat pattern but at the top you add a little i-cord "stem".   I followed the same type of pattern... more »
  • Last month a new niece was born into my family.  She was born at 24 weeks.  Things are looking good for Baby Zoe.  She still has a long road ahead of her but when she's ready to leave the hospital, I want her to have a cute little jacket to wear! I made this jacket from the pattern, Paxton (ravelry link).  I made the 5.5lb-8lb. preemie/small newborn size.  I used some yarn from my stash (Yarn Bee from Hobby Lobby) and knit this up over a few evenings.  It was a relatively easy knit.
